(Oncorhynchus mykiss)

The rainbow trout was first properly identified and named by Europeans in 1792 thanks to the German naturalist Johan Julius Walbaum. Rainbow trout that live in streams normally reach about 5 pounds but those live in lakes or in the ocean (known as Steelheads) can get much larger. The world record was caught in Lake Diefenbaker, in Saskatchewan, Canada and weighed a whopping 48 pounds.
