MUSK OX

The musk ox is native to the Arctic.  It is noted for its thick coat and the strong odor emitted by males during the seasonal rut, from which its name derives.  This musk ox is special because it sits at the intersection of two things I love.  St. Louis history and taxidermy.  The Louisiana Purchase Exposition, informally known as the St. Louis World’s Fair, was held in St. Louis from April 30 to December 1, 1904.  Local, state, and federal funds totaling $15 million were used to finance the event.  More than 60 countries and 43 of the then 45 American states maintained exhibition spaces at the fair, which was attended by almost 20 million people.  This exact musk ox was mounted by legendary taxidermist Frank Schwarz for display and competition at the World’s Fair where it won a gold metal!
